Think in air and water together
A productive root zone needs water and oxygen at the same time. Substrate structure influences how irrigation water is distributed, retained and released while preserving air-filled space for active roots.
Avoid treating retention as an isolated target
More water storage is not automatically better. A medium that remains too wet can restrict aeration, while a very open medium may require frequent irrigation. The useful balance depends on crop demand, container geometry and the irrigation method.
Design around the complete growing system
Evaluate the substrate together with irrigation frequency, drainage, nutrition and climate. Measurements of moisture, EC, pH and drainage help growers adjust the system while observing root development and plant quality.
